Some stories just need to be told using animation, and there’s danger inherent in moving it across formats. And up to now, no movie has really gotten it right–many have gotten it flat-out wrong. While the trailers have looked impressive, capturing the cyberpunk feel of the source material, getting the visuals of the property right are only one part of what makes a good anime-to-live-action adaptation. That said, I wouldn’t exactly call it an excited anticipation. One of my most anticipated movies of the year is Ghost in the Shell, Rupert Sanders’ live action adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s manga and Mamoru Oshii’s anime (as well as its spinoff material).
